Meet Becky Hammon: The NBA’s First Female Coach

The San Antonio Spurs made headlines yesterday: they’ve hired the first female full-time coach in NBA history. After 16 years on the court| WNBA star Becky Hammon will be moving on to the Spurs’ staff as a full-time assistant coach ¡ª and for good reason! Named one of the WNBA’s Top 15 Players of All Time in July 2011| Hammon ranks seventh in WNBA history in points| fourth in assists| and sixth in games. While recovering from a torn ACL last year| Hammon spent time with the Spurs coaching staff for team practices and meetings and was behind the bench for home games. She proved herself to be a natural fit for the job| regardless of her gender.

“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff|” said Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich. “Having observed her working with our team this past season| I’m confident her basketball IQ| work ethic| and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.” While Lisa Boyer was on the staff of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2001 to 2002| she was a part-time coach who was unfortunately not paid for her work. The Spurs’ announcement is a huge step in the right direction for female pro athletes| since currently| there are zero female coaches (in any capacity) in the NBA| MLB| NHL| and NFL.
