Carrie Fisher Reveals How She Was Pressured to Lose 35 Pounds For the Upcoming Star Wars Film

It’s been nearly 40 years since Carrie Fisher starred in the first Star Wars movie as Princess Leia, but the industry sadly hasn’t changed one bit when it comes to appearance. For the newest installment, Star Wars: The Force Awakens (out Dec. 18), Carrie revealed to Good Housekeeping UK that “she was pressured to lose more than 35” pounds. “‘They don’t want to hire all of me ¡ª only about three-quarters! Nothing changes: it’s an appearance-driven thing. I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance. That is so messed up. They might as well say, “Get younger,” because that’s how easy it is,'” she said.

The GH January cover girl didn’t hold back when discussing her weight-loss methods, either. “‘I did it the same way everybody has to ¡ª don’t eat and exercise more! There is no other way to do it. I have a harder time eating properly than I do exercising. It’s easier for me to add an activity than to deny myself something. And when I do lose the weight, I don’t like that it makes me feel good about myself. It’s not who I am,'” Carrie revealed.

Carrie, who was 20 years old in the original film, criticized Hollywood for its never-ending obsession with beauty. The now-59-year-old actress and writer continues to experience issues with the industry: “‘We treat beauty like an accomplishment, and that is insane. Everyone in LA says, “Oh you look good,” and you listen for them to say you’ve lost weight. It’s never, “How are you?” or, “You seem happy!”‘”

Although it’s no surprise that Carrie wasn’t immune to Hollywood pressures, even this time around, we appreciate her for telling it like it is. It seems like the Force will always be strong with this Star Wars veteran.

Jessica Simpson’s Daily Workout Is Surprisingly Simple

Jessica Simpson has always been vocal about her weight-loss goals, from becoming a Weight Watchers spokeswoman to showcasing her hard work in the gym with celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak. So when she debuted her new activewear line, The Warm Up, this month, she had our attention. The line, available at Macy’s as part of her current clothing collection, features flattering cuts and a wide range of sizes and is made for every woman. “As with everything we do, we want women to feel good in their skin and what they’re wearing,” Jessica recently told us. “Our busy lifestyles can take us from the gym to errands or out to lunch, so the styles have to be cute and versatile, but entirely functional for your workouts.” Her favorites: the spaghetti strap sports bra ($15, originally $32) and the “You Don’t Know Squat” tank ($32).

When it comes to fitness recommendations, we’ll take them from Jessica, who lost 60 pounds after her second pregnancy and continues to wow. So what does she do when she’s rocking her new performance apparel line? Jessica’s workout is surprisingly simple and one we all can copy. “I walk three miles a day,” she says. “Eric and I love taking the kids out for long walks in the neighborhood; chasing them around our yard is a workout all its own!” She also spends time on the treadmill instead of the couch. “I love my treadmill, it’s great ‘me time’,” she explains. “I walk and walk while I catch up on my shows.”

In addition to walking every day, Jessica’s strength-training routine is just as easy to emulate. To sculpt definition in her legs, she also adds squats, uphill lunges, resistance band exercises, and exercises on the BOSU. Check out some of our moves below to get legs like Jessica!

Jennifer Lopez’s Diet and Fitness Secrets Are Worth Taking a Few Cues From

Her positive outlook: Turns out even one of the most glam celebs in Hollywood has her off days, but she still keeps her focus on the positive. “Just like anybody else, there are days I feel great when I wake up, and then there are days when I feel more tired or not ready to face the day,” Jennifer tells Elle Canada. “To be quite honest, on those days, I really try to think positively. I try to do a lot of affirmations for good health and positive thinking to just get my mind and my spirit in the right place so I can face whatever it is that I need to face.”

Her healthy body image: She may be celebrated for her body, but Jennifer also knows what it’s like to not look like everyone else. No matter what her shape or size, however, she doesn’t let the pressure to be thin bother her. “I remember when I had baby fat and my thighs were so out of proportion to my ankles,” she tells The Telegraph. “Then I remember dropping weight and being quite thin. Then, when I got pregnant, I remember watching my back, belly and butt grow and thinking, ‘I will never be the same again.’ Then I remember right after the twins were born having that weird jiggly belly ¡ª and kind of loving that, too. Because I earned that jiggly belly. Then came trying to get my body back into shape and how long that took. A whole year.”

Her willingness to sweat: Give Jennifer a workout goal, and she’ll be sure to meet it. She signed up for a sprint triathlon in 2008 to help her drop the baby weight and has become a devoted student of Tracy Anderson to stay in shape. “[I’m like] a fighter, going into the ring. I do my cardio and I do my workouts with the Tracy Anderson Method,” Jennifer says (work out like Jennifer with this leg workout from Tracy Anderson). Jennifer is so committed, she hits the gym even when she doesn’t want to work out. “Sometimes when I get home and I’m not feeling so great, I make myself go to the gym,” she’s said in Redbook. “Then I come home and take a shower, put on a great outfit, some makeup, tie my hair up, and I feel pepped up and great about myself.”

Her healthy habits: No hard partying here, and it shows. Jennifer maintains her enviable glow (even with 16-hour workdays) with a few healthy habits: following a sugar- and salt-free diet (she’s also a “big portion-control person,” she says), eschewing cigarettes and alcohol, and getting eight hours of sleep a night.

Her practical outlook: Jennifer knows that if she wants to look and feel her best, it’s about putting in the hard work. “You got to work out, you got to watch what you eat,” she told Us Magazine. “It’s a job ¡ª you’ve got to buckle down.” Earlier this year, Jennifer even went on a 22-day vegan challenge in order to reset her eating habits and lose weight.
