La Lame Spotlight

“La Lame has been recognized as a trusted and comprehensive source in the intimate apparel and swimwear community for the finest fabrics, trims and prints,” – Adrian Carstens of La Lame, Inc.

by Michelle Broomes, Lingerie Journal Editor.

Braving the economic uncertainty of post-war society in the late 1940’s and diving into the textiles industry, Ben Schneer was rewarded with a successful enterprise – La Lame, Inc. – which catered to the fashion needs of the baby boomers of that new era.

Ben’s La Lame, Inc. fabric business centered on embroidery, fancy yarns and embellished cloths which drove a thriving trade between his local endeavor and his European clientele.

Today the business is still steered by his family – namely Ed and Glen Schneer, his two sons. They pride themselves on the legacy of quality and service left by their father and strive to maintain the traditional values that has hoisted La Lame, Inc. into a respectable position as a go-to textile trader.

“Driven by a passion to be involved in the fashion industry, the Schneer family has developed a place for themselves by cultivating a superior reputation of honesty, service and fairness,” says Adrian Carstens, a representative of La Lame, Inc.
Located in the heart of New York’s Garment District, La Lame Inc. delivers a wide range of products that supports innovation and development for all layers of the fashion sector.

Located in the heart of New York’s Garment District, La Lame Inc. delivers a wide range of products that supports innovation and development for all layers of the fashion sector.

“The Mills that we are involved with are trendsetters and produce lines predicted at least a season ahead,” says Carstens. “They are always helping the up and coming [business] to the fully established with years of experience and knowledge, providing the best advice and guidance through the fabric selection and purchase process.”

A relationship with the fashion industry logically embraces close ties with the intimate apparel sub-sector, and La Lame Inc. proudly and aptly supports lingerie entrepreneurs with relevant merchandise.

“La Lame, Inc. has been recognized as a trusted and comprehensive source in the intimate apparel and swimwear community for the finest fabrics, trims and prints,” says Adrian Carstens of La Lame, Inc. “We have been a consistent source of high quality materials and our extensive selection creates a soothing atmosphere for the creative designer.”

And there is much to be sourced from this company that offers a treasure trove of finds for the underwear industry. La Lame, Inc.’s catalogue of products include stretch and non-stretch lace, scuba and spacer fabrics both in solid and print colourways, bows, ribbons, sliders, bra straps, embellishments and transfers in crochet, epoxy, flannel, laser and wood/cork motifs. Further to this selection, La Lame, Inc. also provides technical features to fabrics such as anti-odour and moisture control, which afford the company a vital advantage in the active wear market.

With such a varied collection of fabrics supplied to the fashion industry, La Lame boasts being a “one stop shop” for many of its customers, catering to individual client needs to ensure the optimum outcome for each business – a goal the company has pursued for nearly 70 years.

La Lame All Over Lace Flocking

“Our number one concept is giving our customers the best service,” says Adrian Carstens, La Lame, Inc.’s company rep. “We work closely with clients in search of specific fabrics by using our network of mills located in the United States as well as Europe and Asia.”

With the needs of the clothing and intimates industry every evolving like a living organism, La Lame, Inc. is determined to stay at the cutting edge of textile manufacturing as it feeds the demand for imaginative products that constantly redefine the fashion skyline.

La Lame Galoon Lace Stretch

Above: Galoon Lace Stretch. Contact info@lalame.com for details.

“We are always in the process of finding new technologies in the market to offer to our customers,” says Carstens on behalf of La Lame, Inc. And of course, whatever the output, it must conform to La Lame’s high standard of product excellence.

“La Lame, Inc. is very proud to only provide fabrics and trims that are of the utmost quality,” Carstens assures. “It’s usually our practice to release new technologies and developments once they have already completed our standardized testing.”

Ensuring that customer’s expectations are managed in the best way possible, especially in an industry that thrives on a reputation of delivering ahead of season, La Lame, Inc. operates on a valuable corporate motto: “We don’t make promises that we can’t keep.” – good advice for keeping yourself covered in the fabric business.

Marmie Lingerie for Sale

Marmie Lingerie

“Marmie was realized out of Krista’s desire to empower women through the positive impact of good supportive lingerie, something which she said transformed her own life.”

by Michelle Broomes, Lingerie Journal Editor.

Ever thought about owning your own lingerie business but weren’t quite sure how to get started? Here’s an opportunity to get a foot in the door. Colorado boutique Marmie Lingerie is up for sale.

Owner and lingerie enthusiast Krista Montalvo told TLJ that she is selling off the 266 sq. ft. business in Telluride, currently listed with realtor Kiplynn Smith, so that it can receive the love and attention that it really needs. Current list price is $62,500.

“I have gotten my business to a point that it needs someone who has more time to invest than I currently have, with a family of three young children,” Krista told TLJ. “I am also home-schooling and still working part time for my husband’s business. I’d really like for someone who can take it to the next level.”

Krista Montalvo of Marmie Lingerie

Krista Montalvo, founder of Marmie Lingerie.

Marmie was realized out of Krista’s desire to empower women through the positive impact of good supportive lingerie, something which she said transformed her own life. A strong entrepreneurial spirit coupled with a love for the healing power lingerie resulted in a business that catered to the need for women to reshape their lives and gain self-confidence through flattering undergarments. Marmie Lingerie was fashioned, carrying lines from brands inclusive of Simone Perele, Cosabella, Chantelle, Nippies, Hanky Panky and Natori, as well as some locally sourced inventory that includes bath and body products and jewelry.

And despite her putting her store up for sale, Krista tells of her love for the business that was born out of a heart to see women live confidently.

“I love the fashion part of it. But the biggest thing that I love is empowering women,” she says. “I would say that it is 80% therapy/empathy to women and 20% retail. Women are usually vulnerable when they are trying on lingerie and I love enforcing to them that they are perfect just the way they are. It’s a great feeling having someone buy a good fitting bra. Their posture totally changes and they have a little extra zip in their step.”

The new owner will inherit Marmie’s client listing and social media fan base.

“I have quite a few local ladies who are regulars but my biggest clientele are second home owners and tourists in the summer and winter seasons of Telluride,” Krista explains. This is accompanied by a healthy social media following of around 2000 FB fans and 800 Instagram followers and an email outreach list numbering over 300 contacts.

Marmie Lingerie

Along with the mentioned square footage, vendor accounts and contacts, the sale also offers physical inventory and shop fixtures within the quoted list price so the new owner will be off to a running start with the existing setup. However, without the physical space the price is reduced from $62,500 to $35,000 according to the owner. Exact details on pricing as well as the shop lease will be supplied to interested parties by the realtor Kiplynn Smith who has deemed the boutique as having “tremendous growth potential”.

In line with Krista’s aspiration to ensure that the business remains loved and profitable, in-depth training is promised to whoever takes the reigns so that women will continue to receive the life changing service that sparked the initial vision for Marmie Lingerie.

Hanky Panky Ziegfeld Club Celebration

Hanky Panky Ziegfeld Club Celebration

Photos by studios606.com.

“What do you all have in common?” asked Laurie Sanderson, Executive Director of the Ziegfeld Club, from a candle-lit stage to a crowd of 50+ guests.

“All of you took the call of [Florenz] Ziegfeld.”

Claps and cheers from members of the Ziegfeld Club and the Hanky Panky creative team answered Laurie.

A critical part of that call is helping and empowering women in the musical theatre and everyone Laurie addressed worked to keep that mission alive.

Hanky Panky Ziegfeld Club Celebration

Last week members of the Ziegfeld Club and Hanky Panky came together at the Player’s Club Dining Hall in New York City to celebrate their collaboration: the Hanky Panky After Midnight® presents Ziegfeld Follies collection.

The new pieces (launching September 2016) were inspired by the performers of the legendary Ziegfeld Follies like Billie Burke and Josephine Baker.

Hanky Panky Ziegfeld Club Celebration

The collection and its launch are designed to bring attention back to the Ziegfeld Club and their mission to support and encourage women in performing arts.

Pieces are imbued with the spirit of those Ziegfeld stars and include beautiful styles like a peacock feather embroidered bralette and thong combo and a fringed shimmy set with matching armbands.

Hanky Panky Ziegfeld Club Celebration Hanky Panky Ziegfeld Club Celebration

Hanky Pany ZIegfeld Club Celebration

Guests were treated to a sneak peek of three pieces on mannequins: the Josephine Chain Back Bodysuit, the fringetastic Lillian set, and Billie Bikini.

Besides seeing the new Hanky Panky pieces, one of the most exciting things attendees were able to witness that evening was the direct impact the Ziegfeld Club makes.

Hanky Panky Ziegfeld Club Celebration

Above and from left: Lisa DeSpain, Tiffany Chalothorn and Masi Asare.

“[The Billie Burke Award] transformed my life…” – Masi Asare.

After Laurie spoke, the Club’s recent Billie Burke Award Winner, Masi Asare took the stage.

“[The Billie Burke Award] transformed my life,” said Masi. “As a result, I have an agent for the first time in my life, recorded a professional demo and that demo opened up an opportunity at a theater in London.”

Hanky Panky Ziegfeld Club Celebration

The Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award is given to an emerging, female composer-lyricist, or team of composer and lyricist, who compellingly demonstrates financial need, professional initiative, and outstanding artistic promise in musical theater songwriting.

Hanky Panky Ziegfeld Club Celebration

Masi was then joined by Tiffany Chalothorn and pianist, Lisa DeSpain to perform a piece from Masi’s play, Sympathy Jones, the story of a young woman who dreams of being a star…a star spy.

After Masi, Tiffany and Lisa took a bow, two models walked towards the stage. One model showed off the Hanky Panky After Midnight® presents Ziegfeld Follies collection’s Lillian set. Next to her, a young woman showed off a replica of a Ziegfeld Follies 1920s Show Girl Costume.

Hanky Panky Ziegfeld Club Celebration

It was the perfect way to end the evening — showcasing the influence the spirit of the Ziegfeld Follies still exerts on music, entertainment and fashion.
