“La Lame has been recognized as a trusted and comprehensive source in the intimate apparel and swimwear community for the finest fabrics, trims and prints,” – Adrian Carstens of La Lame, Inc.

by Michelle Broomes, Lingerie Journal Editor.

Braving the economic uncertainty of post-war society in the late 1940’s and diving into the textiles industry, Ben Schneer was rewarded with a successful enterprise – La Lame, Inc. – which catered to the fashion needs of the baby boomers of that new era.

Ben’s La Lame, Inc. fabric business centered on embroidery, fancy yarns and embellished cloths which drove a thriving trade between his local endeavor and his European clientele.

Today the business is still steered by his family – namely Ed and Glen Schneer, his two sons. They pride themselves on the legacy of quality and service left by their father and strive to maintain the traditional values that has hoisted La Lame, Inc. into a respectable position as a go-to textile trader.

A relationship with the fashion industry logically embraces close ties with the intimate apparel sub-sector, and La Lame Inc. proudly and aptly supports lingerie entrepreneurs with relevant merchandise.

Simone Perele Amour 3D Plunge Bra

Simone Perele Amour 3D Plunge and Tanga

“Often, women think they need to sacrifice style and little details for an everyday bra. But this bra makes us feel beautiful and truly does it all.” – Katia Charle, Simone Pérèle.

Editor’s Note: this post originally appeared on the Simone Pérèle blog & is reposted with permission from the brand.

How did a sexy plunge t-shirt bra become a number one seller? Katia Charle, Simone Pérèle’s Designer and Creative Director, gives an exclusive behind-the-bra look at the brand’s best-selling Amour 3D Plunge:

What inspired you to design the Amour 3D Plunge?
Many women have expressed: it’s not possible to feel beautiful in a t-shirt bra. So I designed a bra that is practical for everyday but stylish and refined. A seamless curve-hugging plunge t-shirt bra is a must-have for all women. Often, women think they need to sacrifice style and little details for an everyday bra. But this bra makes us feel beautiful and truly does it all.

Why did you choose to work with Leavers lace?
Leavers lace, made in Calais, France, is the only lace that is woven instead of knitted. The result is superior softness, as well as an exquisite richness and depth that is visually stunning. By placing the lace at the sides of the cups, you get that touch of chic style, while still being invisible under clothing.

Simone Perele Amour 3D Plunge Bra

“Everything about this bra was meticulously studied to provide superior comfort and support. I’ve designed this bra to fit and support all silhouettes, from B cup to F cup.”

What’s the secret behind Simone Perele’s 3D spacer fabric?
There is a significant difference in the quality of spacer fabrics. Simone Perele was an innovator of high quality 3D spacer material, which is why we are known for our technical excellence. Soft and supple to the touch, our spacer fabric hugs curves to perfection feels like a second skin. This bra gives a beautiful shape without adding volume. It’s also lightweight and breathable, making it a great everyday bra.

What makes this bra so comfortable?

Madame Simone Perele herself said: “The best part of a Simone Perele bra is that we forget we’re even wearing one!” I couldn’t agree with her more. Amour’s soft and breathable spacer fabric truly conforms to a woman’s curves and the plunge shape hugs the décolleté.

Who is this bra made for?
Everything about this bra was meticulously studied to provide superior comfort and support. I’ve designed this bra to fit and support all silhouettes, from B cup to F cup. This bra was made for women who desire to feel beautiful every day. The lace accents and modern spaghetti straps attract a wide range of women.

What makes this bra so universally flattering?
The secret is in the finely tuned balance between curve-hugging coverage and an ultra-flattering and feminine plunging neckline. The plunge shape also makes this bra very easy to wear and style; it’s effortless under everything!

CURVENV Partnership

CURVE Vegas photo by Charles Roussel

“This was the logical evolution in our collaboration with UBM and MAGIC and I am thrilled that we made it happen”. – Pierre-Nicolas Hurstel, CURVEXPO CEO.

The next edition of CURVENV will be held on August 15th, 16th, and 17th, 2016 co-hosted with PROJECT WOMENS – the premier contemporary fashion event for women’s and men’s – at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

UBM, the leading US-based events and marketing services group, fashion’s largest global trade show, producer of MAGIC Marketplace – and recent acquirer of Business Journal Inc.- , and EUROVET AMERICAS / CURVEXPO, producer of the CURVENV trade show and global leader in lingerie and swimwear trade shows, decided to bring their partnership to the next level, starting this August 2016.

The two partners – who have been working hand in hand to consolidate the swimwear and lingerie categories into one location since August 2015 – decided that after two successful seasons of collaboration, it was time for CURVE NV leading lingerie and swimwear brands to share the same scene as the contemporary ready-to-wear brands exhibiting at PROJECT WOMENS, part of the MAGIC Marketplace.

Ready-to-wear, swimwear and intimate apparel markets are merging, with stores developing their inventory and mixing fashion and lingerie brands to create a one-stop shop lifestyle experience for their customers. This new location for CURVENV will greatly ease and improve the shopping experience for international and west coast retailers visiting the Las Vegas fashion marketplace. CURVENV will enable brands and retailers to build stronger relationships, discover new trends, develop the cross-over between product categories and conduct business in a convenient, high-fashion oriented and cost- effective environment.

CURVE Las Vegas Aug 2014 Photos

CURVENV – who will celebrate its 10 year anniversary in 2017 – could not think of better news to share with returning as well as new exhibiting brands.

“This is really the best possible location CURVENV could dream of in Vegas. We are very happy to go a step further into bringing the Lingerie and Swimwear categories together and keep developing business synergies between our shows”, says Chris DeMoulin, managing director of fashion for UBM, in charge of the MAGIC fashion marketplace.

Elila Expands FW17 Options

“Ensuring the wearer feels more confident from the first snap, Elila strives to empower women by producing garments with unparalleled support, making a difference where it matters.”

Retailers looking for a lingerie company focused on stylishly fitting the full bust customer should take note of Elila at CURVENY this summer. The brand heads to Jacob Javits with an expanded size range and new colors for its FW17 collections.

“Our Alphabet is going all the way back to the beginning with A-cups for our Embroidered Microfiber Softcup.”

Elila’s popular Embroidered Microfiber Softcup (Style #1301) goes up to an A cup starting in FW16 and gets an additional color — mocha — to compliment existing white, black, nude, black and silver, and celestial blue options.

Just in time for a new bridal season, Elila’s longline styles receive a size extension. Styles 6621 and 6421 now come in: 36 – 48 | B – I.

Elila 6621 Nude

“Our sexy longlines are going to be worn by many more brides. With one extra band size and one extra cup size, this baby will get a lot of play.” said Ellen.

The Elila design team is sharing their love of a new color — Burgundy. This hue seeps into Glamour Satin & Embroidery Underwire Bra (Style 2021) and the brand’s Jacquard Softcup (Style 1305).

Ellen also points out that Mocha gets even more play these upcoming seasons with the following styles getting a dash of this popular color: Embroidered Microfiber Softcup (1301); Embroidered Microfiber Underwire (2401); Lace Strapless Longline (6621) and the Strapless Longline (6421).

“Our customers come in all curves and colors and wherever mocha is, mocha sells!” said Ellen.

The new size extensions and colors strengthen Elila’s collection of 35 different styles for casual and specialty wear, including shapewear, nursing and sports bras. Each garment has been handcrafted to provide the wearer with optimum levels of comfort, support, and enough “pretty” to make full-figured women feel sexy and comfortable all day (and all night).

“We’re thankful to be at a place where we can focus on consolidating all the novelty that has seeped into Elila over the past year. However, we just can’t seem to stop serving up what plus size women are craving! The Fall/Winter 2017 collection will be about size extensions and color additions. Both of these make us very very happy,” said Ellen.

Drake & Hutch Review

Drake Hutch Kensington Navy Duck Boxer and Brief

Drake & Hutch is designed in England at their Manchester studio in collaboration with Jermyn St. tailors and handmade in Europe.

“We take the principles of classic British tailoring, apply modern fabric and production techniques to create clothing for the modern man.” – Drake & Hutch.

It’s time guys started improving their underwear drawers. There’s more to the world of mens undies than Hanes. Admittedly, I do have the pleasure and luck to work within the intimate apparel industry so I get to see and try on new styles and brands.

Recently, UK-based Drake & Hutch reached out to me on Twitter to see if I would like to review a sample from their SS16 Kensington range. I said yes, and soon afterwards, two pairs of boxer briefs were on their way to New York from across the Atlantic.

drake and hutch

There’s a lot to love and appreciate about this brand. Most importantly, Drake & Hutch’s founder, Pete McGuinness, is focused on running an ethical company.

The brand has broken away from the traditional closed door retail model and offers full transparency in production. A simple idea, from cotton grower to garment maker, every stage of production is advised for each luxury pair of pants they make.

McGuinness spent two years traveling the world looking for suppliers who shared his passion for high quality comfort and it became clear those with the happiest staff, who are treated well and paid fair wages, produced the best quality clothing.

drake and hutch close up

Above: each pair of Drake & Hutch features a tonal satin waistband with the D&H logo.

“This is a small step in the right direction and one we hope will become the norm as opposed to the exception said McGuiness. “Being open and honest about how and where clothing is made gives power back to the customer and this is where the drive for change must come from. We believe putting on the right pants in the morning is as good a place to start as any!”

As I waited for my samples to arrive, I started going over the brand’s website and press materials. The site is clean and upscale presenting a highly approachable collection.

Drake & Hutch menswear

One of my criticisms of Mens Underwear marketing is the focus on dudes with chiseled abs and glistening P90X physiques. I hate those guys.

But a dude with his pet cat?

That’s way more relatable to me. I’m a journalist. I type for a living. You’re more likely to see empty coffee cups or Red Bull cans littered around my desk than a bottle of Whey Protein.

Drake & Hutch’s latest campaign features a model that’s more grounded in reality. And the campaign is fun with that cat and leather football.

Drake Hutch Kensignton Boxer Brief

When my samples finally arrived in the mail, I was pleased to see that the brand’s high-end feel carried over to their packaging. The front gives you a clear preview of the boxer briefs inside. Text, sizing info and logos are kept to a minimum. The focus is clearly the product. The magnetic closure on the box top is great and the geometric pattern lining the inside is beautiful touch.

Each box comes with a little card emphasizing the brand’s commitment to quality:

“Our clothing is designed in England at our Manchester studio and hand made by the finest suppliers in Europe. Collectively our supply chain posses over 100 years of experience in luxury clothing development.”

Drake & Hutch Kensington Navy and White Spot Boxer Brief

For this review, TLJ’s publisher also tried on the Kensington Navy and White Spot Boxer Brief (pictured above).

Inside the boxes the brand sent a pair of their Navy & White Spot and Navy Duck boxer briefs. The fabric (made from Egyptian cotton and knitted into a soft naturally breathable stretch fabric) is smooth and cool to the touch and they feel GREAT!

I spent a lazy Sunday in my Duck Boxer Briefs and really enjoyed them. I love the duck pattern and they are my favorite of the two samples.

So, what’s the verdict on Drake & Hutch?

Get yourself a pair! It’s a great, ethical brand and the quality is some of the best I’ve ever worn. Drake & Hutch is offering free global shipping on orders over £75 with code “GLOBAL” at checkout. Head over to drakeandhutch.com to get your first pair.

Editorial Disclosure: Drake & Hutch provided the underwear in this review for free.

Seven til Midnight Best Sellers

Seven til Midnight Best Sellers Lace and Mesh Teddy 10602P

Above: Lace and Mesh Teddy (style #10602P).

Sometimes, one of the biggest challenges retailers face is selecting items from a brand that they predict will do well with their customers.

Today, we’re taking some of the uncertainty out of this process by showcasing 12 of Seven til Midnight’s best selling styles. The majority of these styles are in style and come in plus sizes. Seven ’til Midnight’s Lisa Linh shares with us why these 12 perform so well at speciality retailers online and in-store:

Q&A with Lisa Linh, Seven ’til Midnight

Seven til Midnight Bohemian Rhapsody 10619

Above: Lace Mesh Bra & Panty (style #10619).

In your opinion, why do you feel these styles are currently best-sellers for Seven ’til Midnight? What’s the common thread between these 12 styles?

Currently, with summer trends, brighter colors and lace detailed styles are always a must-have. One of our top selling items is STM-10619, which features a high waisted panty and it an on-trend item with the cut-out details on the bra set. We have a few red and blue pieces, along with pink and teal, which are summer colors that everyone adores.

Seven til Midnight Lace and Mesh Merrywidow and thong 10626X

Above: Lace and Mesh Merrywidow and thong (style #10626X).

How versatile would these styles be for a retailer (brick-and-mortar or online) to take on? What’s the advantage in stocking some or all of these styles?
All our pieces are versatile, for brick-and-morter and online retailers. Our imagery is gorgeous and clearly shows the details of each piece, therefore online retailers can guarantee the item will arrive as shown. Brick-and-morter stores can easily display any of our styles and we highly encourage it so customers can feel the fabric for themselves.

The advantage to stocking up is a preventive to having these sell out. A few of these items are currently sold out and we always recommend you have a back stock that can last you at least a full month. You never know when styles will sell out!

Are all of these best-sellers available as plus and are they ready to ship?
The majority of all our styles in our catalog are available in plus size. All styles are ready to ship, unless they are sold out.

Of these 12, which style has been a best seller for the longest? What’s the newest style to make it on the best seller list?

STM-9103 has been a steady best seller for us, for the last few collections. A corset is always wanted and this style has resonated well with our customers. There are several new styles on this list including STM-10681 and STM-10619.

Knicker Luxe Spotlight

Knicker Luxe Spotlight

“I wanted to create something that was inclusive and inspirational and that promoted my genuine belief that the best version of ourselves is found when we honour our true self, whoever she is.” Sophie Higgins, Knicker Luxe.

Can a pair of knickers change a life? Sophie Higgins, founder of Knicker Luxe, thinks so. She passionately believes that with the right kind of support women can be their best self, their true self.

And helping make that belief a reality is Sophie’s luxurious collection, Knicker Luxe which offers a dedicated cotton underwear range for women.

“But not just any cotton – a premium Pima cotton, lightweight and luxurious,” explains Sophie.

Pieces have sensuous, tactile details and are flirty and seductive. In just two weeks, buyers have a chance to see Knicker Luxe in person at CURVENY (booth #345). To give our readers a preview of what’s to come, we sat down with Sophie for this intimate Q&A to learn more about Knicker Luxe.

Q&A with Sophie Higgins, founder of Knicker Luxe

Knicker Luxe Sophie Higgins

Sophie, we’d love to know what was the spark that inspired you to create Knicker Luxe?

I had been working in retail and underwear for a number of years before I created Knicker Luxe and it really was an instinctive response to something that I felt was missing in the market. I didn’t want to create just another underwear brand…I wanted to create something that was inclusive and inspirational and that promoted my genuine belief that the best version of ourselves is found when we honour our true self, whoever she is.

What’s the significance of the names of each style? Are the names rooted in someone you know/knew?

At Knicker Luxe we’re women who celebrate women and our cotton knickers are our girls and with this in mind, we wanted to give each style a name to reflect the personality we felt they embodied. They’re not named after women I know – yet! – but I have had a few requests so we’ll see!

Knicker Luxe Spotlight

“My hope is for women to really engage with the Knicker Luxe brand and the idea that celebrating and owning your individuality is one of the most powerful things we can do for ourselves.”

Could you tell us a little bit about the materials used in the Knicker Luxe collection? Why was it important for you to use these materials for your brand?

We know, as women, that we naturally gravitate towards natural fibres. Cotton is comfortable, it breathes, it’s easy to wear but it also has a reputation for being basic and boring! We wanted to challenge some of those assumptions while revamping what cotton can be and so our luxury Pima cotton is key to our innovation in the market. We love creating cotton lingerie collections that manage to be modern and pretty while still respecting that everyday love for cotton that we all have.

Knicker Luxe

Knicker Luxe has a very distinct aesthetic and style that’s a treat on the eyes and wonderful to the touch. Could you tell us a little bit about the lace pattern seen on a lot of the pieces? Is there a name for this pattern? What inspired the pattern?

Thank you! Our lace is really as important to us as our cotton and its pattern reflects the core aesthetics of the Knicker Luxe brand. We believe in the importance of individuality and so wanted to offer something different to a floral lace. Our pattern is a really confident, modern and beautiful expression of this. Also, from a purely functional perspective, having a consistent lace pattern across the styles makes the collection visually cohesive and it allows you to mix and match across styles and colours.

Knicker Luxe Spotlight
“Live your Luxe” – How do you hope fans of your brand will live out this statement?

My hope is for women to really engage with the Knicker Luxe brand and the idea that celebrating and owning your individuality is one of the most powerful things we can do for ourselves. And really, it’s about feeling good in your Knicker Luxe knickers and getting on with being you.

We first met at CURVENY, could you tell us about any new developments for Knicker Luxe since then? What new boutiques are you now available in here in the USA and worldwide?

We’ve had a busy few months since the last CURVENY. We’re really excited to be bringing our next collection, the Kismet Collection, to the show, which features our first ever, custom-designed, print. Since the last show, we’ve picked up several new stockists, both online and boutiques, which we’ve been really pleased with and we’re looking forward to meeting with new buyers this time around. We’re confident the Kismet Collection will really resonant and we can’t wait!

2- Honestidad

Arriba: Medias Plus Size Glamory

3- Simplifique

Dominique Bridal Colette Lace Corset Bridal Bra 8949

Giving Bride SS16 April Capelette

Arriba: Manto Aprila, de The Giving Bride

Elila Asia Mone't Lace Strapless Longline 6621

Lingerie Edit Summer 2016 Recap

The Lingerie Edit Summer 2016 Recap

“The show was buzzing, with the atmosphere charged with over 40 brands showing buyers and social media pundits just what they do best.”

by Michelle Broomes, Lingerie Journal Editor.

It’s the ideal event for independent and emerging brands looking for good company, advice and exposure and this summer edition of the Lingerie Edit took place at the stately Savoy Hotel in London, which plays host to the event biannually. The show unfolded over two inspiring days – July 14th and 15th – and has been deemed as one of the best shows to date. Brands showed off both current collections and those intended for 2017.

The man behind the movement, who really understands niche markets and the needs of independent brands, is industry marketing and PR expert David Finlayson and he gave this summer edition of the Lingerie Edit well-deserved kudos.

“Footfall was higher than we’ve ever had before,” Finlayson informed happily, “and generally people were happy with the mix [of brands] – it was a really interesting mix of new and traditional [exhibitors].”

Brand rep response also proved favourable, with first timer to the show Sarah Charlesworth, Agent and Distributor representing Blush and Le Mystѐre expressing her satisfaction with the show and commenting: “It’s important to be here. The location is great [and] our brands sit within the profile of the Edit and the other brands that are here.”

Anna Sampson of Playful Promises used the show as an opportunity to show the brand’s direction in catering to the plus size market alongside its core standard sizing, with playful boudoir styles up to a 42 back and G cup.

“We’re one of the few brands that likes doing sexy pieces for curve,” she informed. “And it seems that a lot of retailers [at the show] are actually responding to that and understanding that that is a target market that hasn’t really been served in the past, which is great for us.”

Overall, the show was buzzing, with the atmosphere charged with over 40 brands showing buyers and social media pundits just what they do best.

And here are a few highlights from the show.

Lingerie Edit Pure Chemistry

This category saw around 25 brands listed for viewing including show pillars like Pure Chemistry, Bluebella and Loveday London who for the fourth year running claimed the title of ‘Best Brand’. Newcomer to the Lingerie Edit, Inamorata, charmed its way into the hearts of patrons to take the title of ‘Best New Brand’. Inamorata emphasises the raw seduction of black lingerie with textured embroideries, see through mesh and striking leather. Inamorata is described as a contemporary lingerie wardrobe that’s perfectly structured from B to G cup.

Worth mentioning were the beautifully crafted unstructured pieces from Blush, Underella by Ella Moss and the yoga-inspired fashion of Miel Sisters, ideal for younger markets and those who don’t want to sacrifice fun style for comfort.

International attendees like Mauritian brand Aima Dora and America’s Only Hearts were not to be left in the shade. A family run business since 1978, Only Hearts put on a lovely spread of cheeky lingerie, daywear and nightwear with a pair of fan print PJs a real standout piece as the motif is unique to the company. Production is proudly kept in NYC.

Beachwear is always the highlight of the SS season and what was on show at the Lingerie Edit was not disappointing. Returning to the show were the beautiful jewels prints of Lisa King; glam cover ups of Lisa Vogel; girly textured designs from Little White Lies; and the formidable force that is Rebecca Torres with her signature asymmetric swimsuit designs, generous beach wraps and newly added, kaftan design. Torres is also set for a wild SS17 with expected digital safari prints.

Splendid Swim was back again with “fun in the California sun” style including punchy coloured bikinis and contrast piping tanks. The brand also presented a complementary collection of beach lounge pieces.
Spreading its reach into different categories at the Lingerie Edit is brand Ella Moss with Ella Moss Swim back with girly goodness. A black and floral stylized print with lattice back from this brand was definitely a standout piece.

Nautica proved worthy for its classic nautical “cruise” styling and brand Reef for sexy “surfer girl” design.
West Seventy Nine was all about the “coastal couture” as Miami days and Ibizan nights meets poolside glamour through this brand. Floaty frocks, animal print and “drop stitch” cover ups all testified of the designer’s love of fashion surrounding sun, sand and sea.

A well contended swim line, this summer’s Edit included names like Sumarie, Nikki De Marchi, Somedays Lovin and Minkpink.

Loungewear/Accessories
Lingerie Edit Chambresq

Here the loungewear lineup included labels like returners Nui Ami, which has added an attractive denim blue number to its range and Splendid Sleep among other beautiful brands like Blue Marmalade, Chambres and Longstaff Longstaff.

Designer at Longstaff Longstaff, Sophie Barnard, revealed the charming story behind her brand’s name – a name which is rooted in her family heritage, but she herself is leaving a legacy with powerfully exquisite hand-painted design on silk apparel which can be effortlessly cross matched. Her standout pieces were a gorgeous uber luxurious silk wrap robe with matching gown in an unforgettable multi-colour mix.

Maidenform took a walk on the wild side with life like animal print in its sleepwear pieces and the brand also was one of the front runners with its accessories offerings, displaying solutions bras and bum enhancing briefs amongst other items.

Putting its best foot forward again was returner ITEM m6, the brand known for its intelligent hosiery and was a fantastically complementary addition to the Edit despite being one of few accessories brands exhibiting at this Lingerie Edit’s summer show.

In fact, all of the brands that graciously attended the show were wonderful to see and explore – from the stalwarts to the new additions, because, as organiser David Finlayson believes, it is this newcomer/traditional “architecture” to the show that keeps things exciting.
